With reference to the instruction issued by Mr. Platford to the effect that a certain vibration which occurred on a car having very deeply cross grooved oversize tyres was cured by changing these tyres over for plain types, we have received the following communication from Caswell, which may be of interest, and I shall be glad to have your remarks on same.- "Every car in New York is fitted with rubber tyres with various patterns & names moulded on the treads, some of which cause a loud whistling sound as the car is running. In one or two instances, I have pointed out to the drivers that this would account for the "period" (although not entirely) complained of. No steel studded tyres are used over here, & as soon as wet weather sets in, chains are universally fitted to prevent skidding. These chains appear to break very frequently, judging by the sound the loose ends make in striking the mudguards. The above is in reply to your letter of 3/11/14.
