20HP. REAR AXLE BEVELS.

During the last two or three weeks we have had three failures of Rear Axle Bevel Pinions on the Dynamometer. The conditions were not normal, however, as the Axles had been run on quite a number of cars in series during the time when we were having considerable difficulty in obtaining sufficient quiet Axles to test all the chassis in the ordinary way, so that the three Axles in question have done quite a number of full Dynamometer tests in series.

The first failure occurred approximately three weeks ago, the other two were brought to my notice this week. The matter, however, has assumed a different complexion, in as much as we have received a Bevel Pinion from Mr DeSalamanca, St.{Capt. P. R. Strong} Sebastien trial car, which has failed by the teeth stripping in a similar way.

In every case the gears were the original type of 6.D.P. but the material itself was in good condition, so far as heat treatment is concerned.

I am sending all the gears to you for your examination, and would like to have your views as to whether you consider the increased size of tooth we are now using, namely, the ratio of 11/50 in place of 13/60 for same diameters of
