With reference to the complaint of oil flooding the rear brakes, a point which has now been dealt with by R.{Sir Henry Royce} in his memo R5/M16.7.23, which I am leaving for you to deal with. We have in the Test Department a number of axles which are not passed, but which we are using for test purposes, and which have been in continual use during the hottest weather, and on which we find oil does not flood on to the brakes as long as the oil when in a hot condition is not allowed to be above the level of the present stand pipe. We also find that when the oil in such axles has cooled down, the oil level is ½" below the top of this said stand pipe. As the level of the oil and the draining of the oil etc. from the axle is usually done in the cold condition we suggest that the height of the stand pipe in this axle should be reduced at least ½".
