Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} [Redacted] X7080. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}13/H23.12.32. re. PHANTOM II. "O" SERIES. NEW TYPE CARBURETTERS. I have now tested and accepted two of the above chassis for delivery, and as discussed with you today, I consider the suction noise (and roar) on the chassis with this carburetter fitted, beyond anything I anticipated would be the case when signing the standardisation sheet. I do not recollect testing any experimental cars fitted with this type of carburetter on which the suction noise was so bad, and which was fitted with the same scheme of inlet as that now fitted. I feel certain that in its present condition it will be complained of by customers, and even by Sales Dept. since, as compared with our present standard, the noise is certainly more pronounced and will be contested as objectionable. It is therefore important that some inlet silencer scheme should be pushed ahead which will overcome this trouble and which can be applied to existing cars if necessary. I quite appreciate that when the finished body is fitted it may not be so objectionable, and I am arranging to try the first few cars so fitted. This point has, I trust, been demonstrated and made clear to Sales Dept. as normally I feel they are under the same impression as I am, as explained above. EP.{G.
