X2758 ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA INC. SPRINGFIELD, MASS. Oy6 - G 18221 February 18, 1921 To: Mr. Hives From: Mr. Olley Re: Inlet Pipe Many thanks for your letter of January 31st, which has just come to hand. I think my long letter to you on inlet pipes will make clear how far we have gone in the matter. With regard to Mr. Platford's findings that the characteristics of the pipe are controlled by the throttle, I do not think that this applies to the phenomenon of loading-up with which we have been dealing. We find that the pipe which loads up will show exactly the same characteristics when fitted on another car, while a pipe that is free from loading-up will be equally as good when fitted on another car. The application of heat has so far given consistent results on the two or three cars to which the device has been fitted. I thought this information might be useful to you. Oy.
