GRY{Shadwell Grylls} X328 To HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} from HDY.{William Hardy} HDY.{William Hardy}1/HP.14.8.35. c. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} RHO. SECRET. SpectreCodename for Phantom III Gearbox. We send herewith N. Sch's 4582 and 4583 which show modifications to prevent oil leaks on the lines of those tried by Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} on 3.S.1. N.Sch.4582 shows modified oil drains from the servo shaft bearings and N. Sch.4583 a guard for the change gear bracket. We regard both these schemes as temporary only. In the case of the guard we shall be sending a drawing showing this incorporated in the gearbox casting. As regards the drain pipes, we should prefer to have no pipes but instead, drilled bosses in the casing. What we do not know is how far the bosses must extend. Would the Experimental Department try a box without pipes, but with the downward facing holes and stop plate exactly as for the pipe scheme. If this is not satisfactory, the pipes should be provided but only say 1" long and straight, so as to represent what could be provided by a drilled hole in a boss. If still unsatisfactory it would appear that the pipes are necessary, and they should then be tried cut off below the uppermost clip. HDY.{William Hardy} N.Sch's 4582 and 4583 herewith. | ||
