Ignition. There is no magneto ignition; the only ignition being the Delco, which is by battery and plain coil. There are two coils, one to each block of six cylinders. The coils are very small and are fixed at the front ends of the cylinder blocks. The contact breakers and distributors are operated by a vertical shaft which is driven from the front end of the engine. The advance and retard are obtained by advancing the drive, so altering the relative positions of the cams etc. with the lower end of the driving shaft.
Starter. The starter motor and dynamo are Bijur 6 volts, the starter, ignition and lighting all being run from the 6 volt Willard accumulator.
Auxiliary Ignition. There is also an auxiliary battery for ignition in the form of dry cells, so that the engine can be run in case the accumulator gives out or be run down.
Water Cooling System. A duplex centrifugal pump is used for water circulation, one pump supplying each block of cylinders.
Beneath the pumps, which are on the off side of the engine, a thermostat device is fixed which short circuits the radiator until the engine gets warm, when the thermostat operates and shuts off the short circuit pipe and opens up the radiator pipe simultaneously.
The separate sketch No.2 shews the arrangement.
Carburetter. The carburetter is of rather a peculiar kind and appears to have been developed by experiment rather than designed. Contd.
