SHEET 5. TEST No. IV. ADOPTED SCHEME SEMI-SERVO SYSTEM - 98-NK CAR. [Row 1] TROUBLES: Brakes good and consistent. Equalisation good. F.W.B. jaggers. Servo gears noisy, become quieter with running. Front brakes thump. MILEAGE: 511 CAUSE OR REMEDY: Jaggers eliminated by reducing brake shoe area and reducing thickness of front drums. Thumping eliminated on final car by changing friction to equaliser lever. [Row 2] TROUBLES: Exhaust down pipe nut becomes loose C & A washer in manifold joint burns out. Dynamo front coupling fouls down pipe. Exhaust throttle sticks. Rear N.S. front spring shackle fouls front silencer. Front silencer insufficiently rigid and lagging breaks away. Exhaust fish tail opens out. MILEAGE: 850 CAUSE OR REMEDY: Locking plate fitted. - Joint O.K. Washer dispensed with. Exhaust manifold re-designed to give more clearance. Re-designed exhaust throttle on final car O.K. Greater clearance allowed by altering position of front silencer. Stronger support brkt. designed. No. of lagging re-taining bands increased. Stronger fish tail employed. [Row 3] TROUBLES: Steering affected by brake application. O.S. engine tray insufficient as a dirt protector. Front brake equal-iser in too exposed a position. Leather covers on rear brake actuating shafts fail. Bonnet fasteners come undone. MILEAGE: 850 CAUSE OR REMEDY: Proportion of front braking reduced Completely overcome this. Number of louvres in tray doubled. Protecting shield fitted to later cars. Redesigned covers O.K. on later cars. Fasteners not strong enough - positive fastener required. [Row 4] TROUBLES: Steering bad for shocks and wobbles. 6 side steering tube springs broken. MILEAGE: 1260 CAUSE OR REMEDY: Several types of side steering tube springs tried. Final springs completed 30,000 miles on a later car. [Row 5] TROUBLES: Boiling occurred frequently during test. MILEAGE: 1260 CAUSE OR REMEDY: Engine temperature tests carried out. contd :- EXPERIMENTAL REPORT R.R. 493A (50H) (D.B. 175 25-9-24) J.H.D. | ||
