This is .010" undersize. The shaft from Mays' car will be ground down .010" undersize and re-hardened so as to balance the expense. The new bearings which have been fitted are of the latest AC.2 material. Mr. Mays also complained that the brakes were poor. Examination of the liners has shown that the front brakes are nearly worn out and the nearside rear brake was covered with oil. The amount of oil in the rear axle box was not excessive, so the axle has been dismantled to ascertain the cause of oil leakage. This appears to be due to the "Perfect" oil seal on the nearside axle shaft having failed, the leather apparently revolving round with the shaft and the oil escaping past the outer edge of the leather inside the metal casing. As regards the cost of the necessary repairs, we would mention that the account for the previous work, which you agreed should be for a bottom de-carbonisation, and taking up slack in main bearings, has not yet been submitted to Mr. Mays, because in talking to him on the telephone about the condition of the engine at the present time, he seemed to take the view that it was not at all unreasonable to have to pay for new main bearings -continued- | ||
