Independent Gearbox & Frame Stiffening for Bentley. We wish to fit an independent Peregrine Gearbox to a Bentley chassis, and also to introduce a substantial frame stiffening cross member between the engine and the gearbox. The attached drawings, Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1382/3/4, show how we want these arranged. We give below a list of the principal modifications involved. GEARBOX, Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1383. Most of the modifications to the gearbox are necessitated by the moving of the change gear tower from the back to the front of the gearbox. This has been done to keep the change gear lever in the same position as at present. (1) Change gear tower moved forward. (2) " " outward 0.800". (3) The change gear tower is as before except that it is shortened due to the moving out by 0.800", it is separated from the speedometer and shock damper governor drive, and the selecting lever is given an extra set in the transverse direction of 0.800. The cranking of this lever in the longitudinal direction is altered also. (4) The box casting is extended sideways as shown at X on Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1383. This also involves a shorter support for the servo countershaft as the face of the box is moved outward. (5) Vulture type gearbox feet are cast on the front end of the box. (6) An additional bearing is fitted to the first motion shaft. This necessitates modified front cover and 1st motion shaft. The front cover of the box is not spigoted to the box as before but is located by 3 fitting bolts. (7) The selectors are unaltered in position but are extended to the front of the box. The plunger housing is also moved to the front and is of opposite hand. The 3rd and 4th speed selector is of square section in the plunger housing. | ||
