| Strip Examination after 20,000 miles road test in France (2) Cylinders - cont. All liner bores are slightly lipped at TDC and BDC. On checking bores for wear, ovality to the extent of .004" was found at the gland section of A2 and B2 bores, the maximum dimension being at right-angles to crankshaft. A .0015 lip has formed at gland section of A5 bore, but all remaining cylinder bores are in good condition. PISTONS (E.86672. Ground to E.84547. A/D 404. With the exception of A.5 which is damaged on skirt due probably to broken valve, all pistons are in good condition. Slight pitting is noticeable on all gudgeon pins (See chart of piston skirt dims.) There was a normal amount of carbon deposit. Compression and scraper rings are in good condition and free in the grooves. New Pistons fitted just prior to car returning VALVES & FITTINGS Pockettlng and slight pitting occurs on seats of inlet valves and pitting is also apparent on exhaust valve seats. Carbon deposit on base of all stems does not appear excessive. Heavy wear is noticeable on spring faces and location diameters of top and bottom washers. The same being produced in S/M and S/N respectively. E.86942 - Bottom Inner E.86360 - Bottom Outer E.86941 - Top Washer VALVE SPRINGS These are conical wound type and on checking for poundage after test the inner and outer springs were found to be 1.5. lb. and 3.75 lb. under drawing respectively. The figures quoted are averages for a complete set, the actual drop of individual springs being shown on the attached chart. CAMSHAFT & VALVE OPERATING MECHANISM. Camshafts Ex.18898 - S/ZN - 116° Tappets - E.85336 - S/ZN - Not chromium plated. The camshaft has been rejected owing to scoring and heavy wear to the extent .003 on all cams and the tappets have also been rejected on account of excessive wear on the pad faces. SPRING DRIVE. Condition good except for cracking at lips of starting handle dogs as shown by sketch attached. WATER PUMP General condition good. Narrow grooves formed in rotor shaft due to gland distance pieces. Gland bushes lightly scored in bore. OIL PUMP Light scoring is present on the walls of the casing and also on the end faces and journals of driving gear, but no appreciable wear has taken place. | ||
