GOSHAWK VALVE GEAR. X4226

We send you herewith drawing No. Lec 1599 shewing a valve gear rocker spindle with a small hole through the centre.

You will remember that we removed the head of the Goshawk we had at W.W. for the purposes of inspection and it was found on putting back the valve gear that the rockers became stiff to move on the rocker spindle with only quite a moderately tight pressure on the holding down nuts clamping the spindle.

When the nuts were released the rockers became free again.

The original design shewed a spindle .625 diameter outside and .375 internal diameter. The spindle on the car was .6 outside and .4 inside. This difference in thickness however would not amount to much in avoiding distortion of the spindle.

We should like to know what the experience of the Experimental department is in connection with this point and whether they think it necessary to strengthen up the rocker spindle as per Lec 1599.

It should be noted that the stronger spindle is capable of being case-hardened if we should desire to do so.
