Brown} BY/NS.{Norman Scott}1/MG.5.4.39 WRAITH PETROL TANK SUPPORT STRAPS FW.1104/5 and FW.527. The straps on Production have the turn over at the end which forms the eye secured by rivets. The shoe for supporting the tank is also fastened to the strap by rivets. RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/DWB{D. W. Brown} produced a sample where the riveting was replaced by welding. The welded strap and a riveted strap were tested by H1/Glt. Their report is as follows: TYPE OF STRAP | BREAKING LOAD Tons | REMARKS Riveted | 1.19 | Sheared through Rivets. Welded | 1.43 | Failure of material in tension BY and Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} are agreed that the welded strap can be introduced into production as soon as convenient, provided that 5% of the pieces are tested to destruction. The Production Control Office are to be asked to advise us when the new straps can be brought on to production. BY/NS{Norman Scott} | ||
