X4308 To ROYCEA. from Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /AJL. Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /AJL1/LG25.1.29. 'A.T.' REV: COUNTER DRIVE. Referring back to your ROY {Sir Henry Royce} /GEA10/EB16.11.28. We have duly tested the improved type of revolution counter driving end. The sample submitted has failed after only 1100 miles. Although the new type end is considerably more robust as regards the bearing surfaces for the gear spindles we are of the opinion that the gears are very much too small for their job. We have dismantled the unit after it had failed to ascertain what had gone wrong. We are sending it to the Stores for despatch to the makers. Will you kindly issue the necessary instructions to the Stores and advise the A.T. people of our opinion of the improved part. Please ask them to let us have another unit as quickly as possible to replace the broken one and to let us have their comments on the failure. We should welcome a further improvement in design.
