We thank you for your suggestions regarding petrol pumps.
Our views about them are as follows :-

(1) Separate cages for the spherical edged brass rollers would not be practicable and very little gain in centralisation of the armature would result by having the washers evenly spaced, the resulting gap is not large even when concentrated in one place.

The eccentricity that is causing the trouble is that of the pole piece in relation to the magnet pot.

We have made an end cutter with a bush locating in the roller race to true up existing pumps and will forward you details in due course.

(2) It would not be safe to use rubber in the existing pumps, as it swells in the presence of petrol and there is only a small clearance between the armature and washer when the points break.

An improvement in cases of noisy pumps can usually be effected by seeing that one of the fibre washers is attached to the pole piece thus making a packing for the spindle to slide through and getting the benefit of the air cushioning from the recess in the armature.

(3) Pumps are wound with a resistance winding to quench the back E.M.F. when the points break.

(4) Brass valves have been fitted since 3.9.36. and all pumps returned from Depots have had this modification.

If you are doing all your own repairs to pumps you should obtain a supply of brass valves.

One layers of oiled silk is now fitted between the two layers of G.3 material which we hope has cured the previous diaphragm trouble.
