Oil consumption and oil temperature rise in relation to engine speed.

4½ pts/min. The consumption at an average speed of 35 m.p.h. worked out at 509 m.p.g. for the Phantom and 527 m.p.g. for the 40/50 HP. The corresponding oil pressure to give the same flow in each was 18 lbs/sq.in. and 135 lbs/sq.in. respectively. The Phantom was fitted up with three main bearing feeds.

OIL TEMPERATURE.

During the previous experiments with oil flows, a record was taken of the temp. of the oil supplied to the bearings and also the temp. after discharge. The oil supply was kept as nearly as possible at 60°C by passing it through an oil cooler, the temp. being taken at entry to the oil distributing pipe. The discharge temp. was taken where the oil flowed out from the sump and curves are here given showing the measured temp. rise with speed for different oil flows. As would be expected the smaller the oil flow the greater the temperature rise. In the diagram the same type of lines correspond i.e. the full line showing the temp. rise corresponds with the full line for the oil flows. The temp. given by these curves cannot be taken as being contd :-
