32-EX. PHANTOM III.

Threaded Shackles.

Referring to the front ends of both rear springs, we note that the bushes have screwed along the threaded shackle pins and are hard against the near sides of the anchorage brackets.

This occurs when the bush tightens up on the thread, which has been attributed to dirt. On bump, the spring eye has a wrapping effect round the bush and turns it on the threaded pin in the intended working manner, but on rebound, the eye tends to unwrap off the bush and the tightness of the thread prevents it from turning. In this way the bush turns in the spring eye more in one direction than the other and traverses along the thread on the pin, until it is hard against one end.

No trouble of this kind has been observed with the rear shackles. We are of the opinion that the successful working of these shackles is affected by the relative and absolute diameters of the pins and bushes and that the proportions of the rear shackle pins and bushes should be tried at the front ends of the springs. This we understand is already receiving attention.
