Micro-Examination Report BODa M 1,394 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer} H1/EJW.2/JN.24.8.37. Laboratory ROLLERS FROM 32-EX. STEERING GEAR. Your Ref. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}21/JH.20.8.37. All the rollers from the race have been examined. Numerous cracks were found both in the fragments and the unbroken rollers. These cracks however do not appear to be associated with oxide or decarburisation, and those which were opened up, were free from discolouration. No signs of seams or abnormal slag content were found, and the micro-structure was fine-grained and uniform. Etching tests failed to reveal any soft spots in the surface of the rollers and Rockwell hardness tests gave a satisfactory figure - viz. C 61 - C 63. We are returning the rollers and fragments. Seven of the latter are mounted as specimens. They have been etched for examination and repolished. We shall be glad if you will obtain the maker's opinion of these. The cam follower is also returned herewith. H1/EJW HE | ||
