Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} ORIGINAL R-W deficiencies Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG30.6.22. 7-GOSHAWK-11. V4086 We have received the following report from T. Maddocks who is in charge of 7-Goshawk-11 car in France:- * R-W WHEELS. X3599 Bad creaking from N.S. rear wheel. Cured by tightening up still further. This wheel has not been touched since the R-W expert tightened it up, since when, the car ran 2000 miles to the time of being tightened again. BRAKES. V4253 Both hand and foot brakes are, up to the time of writing, very quiet indeed. When I took over the car the driver here said the brakes were not very good and on trying the car I found they were fairly good but not what they ought to be. On looking round I found oil was coming out of the brake drums. I took at least 1 1/2 pints of excess oil from the axle. The brakes are now quite quiet but it is possible that there is still a very slight trace of oil on them which is helping to keep them quiet. STEERING. V4263 When greasing the car round on the 23rd. I found the two bolts which hold the bottom steering lever on the O.S. were quite loose though split pins were still in them. They were tightened up and the bolts on the N.S. examined and found O.K. Yesterday the 26th. I found the bolts on the N.S. lever quite slack and had to tighten them on the road. These nuts were pinned up so they could not come unscrewed. The total mileage of the car is 4,300 miles*. We have written to Maddocks to ask him whether the oil drains on the rear axle were free, because we expect oil to drain away without getting on to the brakes. As regards the bolts coming loose on the steering lever, we have had this happen on one of the other Goshawk car's. We also have this happen on the bumping rig. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
