To C.J. from Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} [Handwritten notes:] AH Due to Previous competition + 1/72 Prenger in file in Browns... 21/2 Worl/EWT/FG13.2.22. Re Strengthened Rocker Arm in Steering Box. E1/M7.2.22 attached. In the first place, might I point out please, that whilst the Works have parts for 630 chassis in hand, 200 of them have not been machined beyond the 3rd operation. I agree that R.{Sir Henry Royce} had always advised laying down chassis in batches of 100 at a time only, except where small parts were concerned. I think he will agree, however, that when turning out chassis at the rate of say between 30 and 40 per week, as we were doing late in 1920 and early in 1921, it would have been difficult for us to keep up such an out-put if batches of 100 sets had only been going through the Shops; it was during this period that the large number of Rocker Arms in question were put in operation. Further, I would like to point out the following:- (1). That the machining work on these Rocker Arms is somewhat of a lengthy process. (2). That there are 3 types, and when the Works were given instructions to proceed with the required work on these Rocker Arms, it was not definitely known exactly how many of each type would be required, with the result that after we had proceeded with, - say a number of "A" Type, for example, - these had to be put into the Stores, and batches proceeded with of other types. This was no fault of our Ordering Dept. or the Works; it was due to our not knowing customer's requirements until specifications were received. From the explanations given R.{Sir Henry Royce} will no doubt now agree that the Works should not be called upon to accept the responsibility for £873 for the scrapping of Rocker Arms if they are to be replaced immediately with the suggested strengthened type.
