We did not think this would work except erratically, as shown in N. Sch. 2445 with a small pipe in the pendulum lever. We therefore submitted SK-119 (attached) showing an improved method which however had disadvantages in convenient assembly.

Mr. Bijur now (examining N. Sch. 2445) believes that this will not prove permanently satisfactory on cars which may stand long in storage and run short mileage in a year, because of the fact that oil will not appear at the ball for each pulling of the pump handle.

Their modern practice and recommendation is shown in SK-206.

The pipe down the pendulum lever should be not less than 3/16" and preferably 1/4" internal diameter, so that it cannot air lock, and a small pocket should be provided at the upper end as shown to collect oil flowing from the rocker shaft.

It would probably be desirable to use a good sealing compound on the serrated joint in assembly.

Very truly yours,
