Glycerin has one remarkable property, in that it is able to dissolve a number of metallic compounds.
It will dissolve iron oxide in the presence of caustic soda, but at the strength of caustic soda required, the aluminium cylinder head will be attacked.
It should also be noted that if the glycerin is used for a prolonged time, or if used a number of times, its boiling point will be raised, and this will endanger the solder of the radiator tubes, which melts at about 200°C.
