is beneficial to our results, and should not advise that this lagging be deleted in order to save using stainless steel exhaust pipes, until we have carried out further experiments.

HOT AIR LEAKS.

With an air temp. of 170C the air at the top of the bonnet is 450C, whilst the air which goes under the floorboards is as much as 600C. It is therefore important that the air at 600C should be prevented from entering the car.

GEAR LEVER & HAND BRAKE LEVER.

There is a R.W. scheme for preventing air leaks at the gear lever and hand brake lever, shown on F.84035. We understand that a print of F.84035 is not at present supplied to the coachbuilders. Although we believe this scheme is intended to be shown on the subframe drawing, it is very hard to understand from the subframe drawing what is required.

We have examined 5 P.II cars in our Repair Dept. and on all of them it shows that an attempt has been made to fit the scheme F.84035. Coachbuilders obviously are not sufficiently guided in this respect, as pieces of wood are often rigidly attached to the gear lever which rest on the frame, for a draft preventative. This draft preventative also prevents relative engine to frame movement at this point. It is therefore liable to cause a bent change speed lever causing the shaft to seize, especially with our flexible engine mountings. Any draft proof scheme which prevents free relative gear lever to frame movement must be avoided. (58-GN is being fitted up with this scheme - Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair})

FITTING OF THE FLOORBOARDS.

The top floorboard especially requires careful fitting as the mats do not cover the cavities caused from inferior fitting. For future design we should like to see the speedometer cable and petrol gauge flex brought through the dashboard, so that no grooves need be cut out of the top board. Metal strips overlapping the joints of the floorboards are thought to be necessary. The strip approx. 1" wide is attached to the underneath of one of the boards. The floorboards under the front seats should have the same treatment, as the movement of the cushion pumps hot air into the car. As so much of this work lies in the hands of the coachbuilder, the final tester
