WORKS TELEPHONE LYMINGTON 520 WORKS TELEGRAMS "WELLWORTHY" PRIVATE TELEPHONE LYMINGTON 232 MANAGING DIRECTOR'S OFFICE 1020a WELLWORTHY PISTON RINGS LTD., LYMINGTON HANTS 10th February, 1939. JH/CJR. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham Esq., Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Derby. Dear Mr. Robotham, I think we are making quite good progress with the Bearing job, but I do not think we know all there is to know, and certainly we do not think we know all you know, with regard to two or three things in connection with the casting. Now that we have got a new foundry I am not altogether satisfied that we have sufficient system with regard to the raw material control in the foundry, and therefore I would like our Mr. Watkinson, the Foundry Manager, and Mr. Plummer, our Chemist, to come up on some day when you are actually going to be casting AC.9, because every time we have visited you - and we have had three shots at it up to the present - we have never arrived at a time when we could actually see any bearings being cast. The points upon which we would like to consult you and ask your advice are questions of pouring temperatures of the metal, temperatures of the die, method of temperature control in the crucible itself, and the limits of hardness in the as-cast condition. There is also the question of grain size, and have you found any necessity for laying down the pouring temperature etc. in connection with the question of grain size. Do you rough machine your bearings, and do you find any need for acid testing? If Mr. Plummer could have a chat with Mr. Hall I feel sure quite a number of outstanding points could be cleared up, and if you let me know which day you will definitely be casting Bearings, I can arrange for Mr. Watkinson and Mr. Plummer to come along at any time to suit your convenience. Yours sincerely, [Signature] Jhn. Howlett | ||
