1020a Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}4/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 10th February, 1939. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Howlett, Esq., Wellworthy Piston Rings Ltd., LYMINGTON, Hants: Dear Howlett, With reference to your letter of the 7th February regarding bearing particulars, as this is rather outside my province I have handed it over to our Buying Dept., who will doubtless be writing you in due course. There is one other thing which I think may interest you as a manufacturer of pistons. We have recently developed a piston in conjunction with our combustion chamber which enables us to obtain, approximately, half compression ratio higher than is possible with a flat top piston. It is, of course, applicable to any overhead valve engine, and you will see a bit of publicity given to it in "The Autocar" next week. It has enabled us to put an engine on the road which at 8:1 compression will function on the best fuel which can be obtained from a pump. We have a provisional patent on this piston, and if you should be interested in taking it up, I would approach the Administration on the subject. Yours sincerely, | ||
