"Autocar". July 8th 1916. X.3424. USEFUL HINTS AND TIPS. Permanent Black Finish for Brasswork. The following method of producing a black finish on brass or copper work should interest those motorists who find the constant labour of keeping bright the brass lamps, and other car fittings, calls for too great a demand on their time. The results are very pleasing in appearance, and the black finish produced is capable of withstanding a considerable amount of wear. The brass work to be treated should be well cleaned and polished, and quite free from grease. The following solutions are required :- A.{Mr Adams}- Nitrate of copper --- --- --- --- --- 6 ozs. Water --- --- --- --- --- --- --- 6 ozs. B.- Nitrate of silver --- --- --- --- 6 ozs. Water --- --- --- --- --- --- --- 6 ozs. When required for use these two solutions should be mixed together as follows:- Copper solution A --- --- --- --- --- 2 parts. Silver solution B --- --- --- --- --- 1 part. Water --- --- --- --- --- --- --- 3 parts. The article to be treated should be uniformly heated in an oven to a temperature of about 250° Fahr. and the solution uniformly applied with a soft brush, when it will dry very rapidly and leave a green coating.
