X.4242 RE "GOSHAWK II" STARTING HANDLE.

Referring to N. scheme 707 which shows a starting handle drawn in a similar style to the scheme used on "Goshawk I", Mr. Royce has reconsidered the matter and would like to produce something altogether simpler and cheaper.

To effect this it has been decided to carry the starting handle in the tool box, as it is found that this considerably simplifies matters. A stationary tube should then be provided between the Nos. 1 and 2 cross members, having a simple hanging cover over the front end. The nose of the crankshaft will be provided with a cross pin, and the removable starting handle with jaws to engage with the cross pin, this being the simplest form of clutch we could fit, and which gives two positions, one of which should come fairly right for pulling over the compressions.

The starting handle should be made of a one-piece forging bent round to form a crank, and the grip should be in aluminium held on by a rivetted washer.

Sketch is attached illustrating the above remarks.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
