F.S. (XX. 140. 18.7.13) E.P. 4635. Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}/SM22/L27813. Re Steering Wobbles. X.457 Hy{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} 27-8-13. Mr Day. The following is an extract from Na.{Mr Nadin}c Mr Royce's memo R3/P21813 :- "I would be glad if Mr Day will look into "the production of a satisfactory plain "thrust bearing. "While mentioning this matter I think "Mr Haldenby missed a point in the test "of reversibility, by not putting a load "on the hand wheel, for the force at the "stub axle to lift. "You would notice that I mentioned "that we should require for this test a rope "wheel instead of a hand wheel with a "flexible rope of wire or hemp - sash cord "would do - so that we could resist the "turning of the hand wheel by, say, 100 inch "lbs, then by applying force to the stub "axle we could find the efficiency of the "gear when the wheel tries to wobble the "steering wheel. "I am fully convinced that the intro- "duction of any friction in connection with "this part will spoil the beauty of our "steering from a free and non-tiring point "of view. "I think we might try a worm of slightly "less pitch, say 1. instead of 1 1/8. Will "Mr Day instruct one?" p. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} | ||
