Use of Bakelite for manufacturing coil cases, dynamos, and other electrical components.

RE BAKELITE MOULDS - COIL CASES - (BY2/P22/6/21) X 3573 X 3445 X 3485 We intend to use exactly the same coil and pattern on "Goshawk II" as on the 40/50 H.P. This is our own type with four lugs at the base. There are moulds for this I believe in U.S.A. and I think it would pay us under the present condition to get our cases and covers from them and so leave us free to make moulds for other pieces which we cannot get. If we are to continue to make our own electrical equipment and circumstances force us to make our own insulation moulding, it will, I think, be necessary for us to obtain a suitable press for the small pieces such as we use in quantity. I cannot believe that it will pay us to potter with hydraulic jacks and gas heating, but we ought to obtain either the press complete, or the designs of what has been developed, especially for this work in the States. X 3945 If we make our own dynamos and motors we should have to make up a commutator with bakelite, as this appears to make a very sound job, and do the work with such a tremendous reduction in cost. A stock of bakelite micarta tubes (for bushes) and sheets should be obtained suitable for our standard screws which are insulated, i.e. 5/8BA., 3/8BA, and 2BA, sheets of 1/32", 1/16" and 3/16". This material should be less expensive than mica or micanite and with few exceptions serve the purpose equally well. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
