to W.M. (for the C.S.T.C.) from E.V. copy to W.H. (HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}) Y4613 ORIGINAL DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}2.10.27. HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} SCUTTLE ISOLATION. On 10.S.J., which is a Twenty Saloon with subframe mounting, we have had fitted between the scuttle and the dashboard a small friction damper to attempt a reduction in the relative movement which results from total isolation. Various forms of semi-flexible attachments which we now use are not really satisfactory. On N.Sch. 2470, which we enclose herewith, it will be seen that the device consists of one of our engine torque reaction dampers fitted up to slip under a load of about 50 to 80 pounds. On bad roads down here our short trials seemed to shew that this scheme was very effective in damping down the excessive relative movement, the amplitude being reduced to an almost imperceptable amount. Yet, by close examination it was found that the damper was working the whole while. We suggest that this scheme, which was suggested by Mr Royce, should be patented if possible, as it is of great interest to the coachbuilding trade in general both in England and on the Continent, whilst America are still searching for a solution. We would be glad if H.S. would arrange to fit up E.A.C.7. chassis 14 EX. with this device as shewn on N.Sch.2484. and make more extensive tests to verify our conclusions. We also suggest that it might provide useful information if we were to fit the device to a Sales car which has given trouble in this respect. If W.W. are informed of such a car they will make a sketch of a suitable fitment. EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} | ||
