J.3. Gearbox.

Examination of the J.3. gearbox in the Vulture shows that the retaining plate for the 2nd speed S.M. clutch cone has worn the cone badly, and the marking on the plate indicates the need for more stiffness in the plate.

We are therefore sending N. Sch.3997 herewith which shews a stiffer plate and also shews means for avoiding any holes in the bearing surface of the plate with the idea that oil may be retained longer.

Slots are provided in the end face of the outer cone to allow oil to escape from the clutch when it is revolving. The clutch should be tried both with and without these slots. This can be done by rotating the disc so that one or other of the two sets of setscrew holes is used.

The drawing supersedes N. Sch.3393 but the 1BA Bolts and lightening holes of the latter scheme should be retained.

The cam angle used should be 45° as there is still some uncertainty about the freedom from crashing on the present box and until we are sure that there is a margin of locking power such as may be obtained by the use of a 6° or 8° cone angle with a screw thread, it is best we think to retain the 45° cam.

We should like this scheme regarded as urgent in order that it may be fitted to the box at the earliest opportunity.
