INDEPENDENT AIR VENT PIPES - PETROL TANK.

With reference to PN.{Mr Northey}1/WT.8.9.33., the actual facts are that the scheme was developed some two years ago in order to deal with a complaint by Mr. Bilton of Hull, who threatened to take legal proceedings and it was found to be a cure.

The same scheme has also been fitted on about half a dozen other cases where the owners complained of petrol fumes entering the bodies.

In regard to the two trials cars 20-MY and GRW-32, it was pointed out to us by JLE.{J. Lee Evans - Chassis Test Manager} during a recent visit to the Works that the bodies being fitted on these two cars were of the type which are likely to be subject to petrol fumes entering the interior, and it was suggested that we apply the independent air vent to the petrol tanks, so that Sales would have an opportunity of getting some experience with it, but unfortunately some wrong instructions were issued by the D.O. hence the reason for the scheme as applied in these two cases not being satisfactory.

However, it would be interesting to know if the cause of petrol fumes entering the body is due to petrol splashing out of the filler cap, and if it is still found that the trouble does exist now that the independent air vent pipe has been removed, the latter scheme could be re-fitted in the correct manner, if desired.
