HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} ORIGINAL. DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}1/M7.9.27. Copy to R.{Sir Henry Royce} SC. re. HOOPER CABRIOLET X5830 DE VILLE - INDIA. X5380 R.{Sir Henry Royce} asked us to examine this car as he has experienced violent rattles and knocks emanating from the scuttle and floor. We find that the body mounting and floorboards are widely different from those our designs have called for. (1) SUBFRAME FORWARD SUPPORTS. These were originally sent on the frame itself to F53572. (1V) but we later asked (in Dal/M81126.) that Derby would set out some modified pots and rubbers on the lines of those shewn for Phantom on N. sch. 2241. Hooper's informed us that modified pieces were fitted to the frame itself by Derby, but it would appear that Derby have not altered the pieces on the chassis to correspond before mounting, with the result that the body has no sideways control, and the subframe knocks the main frame. Packings are missing under the lower pots, so that the body rests on the main frame and creaks loudly. The whole mounting is hopelessly wrong. Would BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} kindly send us a print of the modified support on the lines of N. sch. 2249. which we presume was set out and instructed. (2) FLOORBOARDS (FRONT.) The treatment of the front foot and floor boards in no way resembles that called for on N. sch. 1989.(V). The sloping board is all in one piece instead of two pieces, and a scrap piece of aluminium, which has to be unscrewed to remove the board, is the gap plate. The horizontal boards which (1) | ||
