With reference to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}2/MH.{M. Huckerby}29.6.39. report on test running of B.80, number 5 unit, will you please make the following detail modifications to overcome some of the troubles experienced during the test :- (1). The thrust plunger at front end of camshaft should have its material altered from BZ/FD.{Frank Dodd - Bodies} to S/ZN. hardened on spherical surface, the plunger should also be lengthened to give an end float clearance of .004" to .006" instead of the present clearance of approx. .040". (2). The location of the exhaust manifolds should be altered to agree with E.CD.1085 viz. the branch flanges adjacent to the downtake flanges should be fixed in relation to the cylinder head and the remaining flanges should all have slotted holes. Design E.CD.1085 was not detailed, as manifolds detailed to verbal instructions were already in existence and these have been used all along. Regarding the following points, these will all receive consideration and designs made to meet the requirements :- (a). Valve Springs. (b). Revised Induction System. (c). Leakage from rocker shaft studs. (d). Modified Rocker Cover Joint. (e). Oil leakage from tappet doors. We have already issued a design of stiffer tappet doors with allowance to prevent the fouling of the door on the crankcase at the centre of engine facing on E.CD.1244, which also included a thicker cork joint washer, and we shall be sending a further modification to fixing nuts to reduce the risk of over-tightening and oil leakage at the nuts. The level of the oil in tappet chamber has already been lowered by reducing the height of the overflow bosses, so that is level is now .125" below the opening of the door joint.
