COPY ROLLS-ROYCE DEPARTMENT - 12th March, 1929. REPORTS ON OWNERS' COMPLAINTS AND FAULTS NOTICED DURING THREE MONTHS ENDED 28TH FEBRUARY, 1929. I have had two cases of Phantom owners (75.MC., 79 TC.) complaining of missing fire. I tested Cars when brought in to the Depot, and the engines ran perfectly, both for power and slow running, to which the owners agreed, but said the mis-firing happened only occasionally. On a thorough examination of the engine on 75.MC., I found slight signs of stickiness on an exhaust valve. The cylinder head was removed and carbon was found on all the exhaust valve stems, although the piston tops were dry. The Car had done only 2,500 miles since the engine was decarbonised, and there was not sufficient carbon on the pistons to affect the power etc. The valves, etc. were cleaned and re-erected, and I have had no further complaint. I noticed that an excessive amount of oil had passed down the valve stems, so I plugged all the rockers over the valves, which I think, will improve it, as both cars are run only in the City, and do a great amount of slow running. The Carburetter Mixture Control on the Phantom wears badly, after the Car has been in use for a while, which makes it impossible to get an accurate setting of the jets. The worst feature appears to be on the control rod which goes through the crankcase. I have had a certain amount of trouble with Gudgeon Pin Knock on Silver Ghost models, which has been due to the gudgeon pin being slack in the piston. On examining our stock, which was sent out recently, I noticed that the gudgeon pins are an easy push fit in the pistons. On 20 h.p. Models, the rear number plate, together with Lamp, always gets damaged badly, if the Car is driven over rough country: and I have to fit them to the rear of off-side wing, with stays to the Frame.
