Victor Engine, E 128 FR, 15.052, 16.175 " ", E 128 F, b'on, 15.820 INSTALLATION—The Flywheel should be machined to the exact turn diameter, which is clearly marked on the face of every ring gear and to such a depth into the face of the Flywheel equal to the depth of the Ring Gear, which is case-hardened all over. Do not attempt to turn the Flywheel to size by caliper measurements. BOLT-ON TYPE GEARS—These Gears are produced in two types:— (a) Ready for immediate fitting. In exact accordance with Bendix recommendations. Many of the Steel Rings have the "flat 45° angle" chamfer in accordance with Bendix practice. These gears being adaptable to either front or rear pinion entry but not reversible on application. (b) Some Gears produced after stripping a broaching reading of 200/250 (40/45 tons tensile). These gears before fitting must be heat treated to 280°/290°C. and shrunk on the flywheel. No attempt must be made to fit these gears without carrying out this procedure. N.B. In future these gears will only be serviced in the hardened state for arrangement with customers who agree to proceed accordingly. DETERMINING PROPER APPLICATION—Care must be exercised to positively identify the correct replacement Gear. (a) If Pinion enters from the front or Engine side of Flywheel, use "F" chamfer. (b) If Pinion enters from the rear or Clutch side of Flywheel, use "R" chamfer. TO AVOID MISAPPLICATION—Note that chamfers are always on the pre-pressure side of the Flywheel Ring Gear teeth, the Ring Gear must be so installed that pinion pressure in cranking the Engine is on the full face, not on the chamfer of Ring Gear Teeth. TO EXPAND THE GEAR BEFORE FITTING—Heat slowly from 260°C. to 287°C. taking about 15 minutes to get uniform heat. Let cool naturally—slowly, in place on flywheel. Gears must not be shrunk or coped with water. To estimate the heat accurately, polish a piece of the gear and take out of the muffle when Brown starts to turn Purple. At correct heat the gear will easily slip over the flywheel with 1/64" to 1/32" to spare. Rapid and irregular heating may scrap the gear. The heating colours are:— Brown at 265°C. Light Purple at 276°C. Full Purple at 287°C. CAUTION—When undertaking the actual work of fitting, be sure to determine that the gear selected is the size most suitable for the Flywheel. Special attention being given to the external diameter and width of the original teeth in the event of two different width gears are needed. Apply for blue print of Special FITTING INSTRUCTIONS. N.B. Diesel Engines must be fitted with our special alloy steel gears, prices on request. N.B.—New sizes are constantly added to production N.B.—We offer a service of rough and machined blanks only where required to suit a variety of applications, made to print or sample. When ordering a new Ring Gear, please state No. of Teeth on flywheel, name of car, and whether bendix pinion enters from (clutch) or front (engine) side of flywheel. | ||
