BIRMINGHAM.19.

For the attention of Mr. Toulmin.

Dear Sirs,

We are sending to you, under separate cover, one pair of WT.13 type horns for general overhaul and adjustment.

These horns have just completed 21,000 miles test running. During that time the alto horn failed intermittently; apparently due to being out of adjustment. It was also reported that the screws securing the trumpet worked loose and allowed the trumpet to fall off. Finally on the return of the car, these horns were tried on the bench, when it was found that the alto horn would not sound on the soft note, but was alright on the loud side.

As regards the working loose of screws; we have had, at different times a number of cases of the body screws working loose, and sometimes falling out. To overcome this we suggested some time ago that all screws should be positively locked. We were given to understand however that the taper on the screw was ample for this purpose, providing the screw was properly tightened.

In view of this latest case we would like to know what you propose to do to prevent further trouble particularly as we are on the point of standardising this type of horn.

Yours faithfully,
