With further reference to your instructions to the C.O., BY/JH10/H30.10.19, instructing for three sets of split pistons to be prepared for 10-LW, 10-LW and 1-LW, in view of the instructions contained in En's memo. BnS/W31.10.19, will you please instruct for the necessary cylinders and pistons to be supplied to us from the works for sending out for fitting to chassis delivered, numbers of which are as follows :-

1-X 6-PP 30-LW
4-X 11-PP 39-LW
2-PP 9-LW 36-PP
8-PP 17-LW 3-LW
3-PP 27-LW 3-X
4-PP 28-LW

It is necessary when changing over the pistons outside to supply pistons and cylinders complete which have actually been tested and passed on the dynamometer. The cylinders and pistons removed from these cars will then be returned to the works, and cylinders can be used up on production.

Although it was definitely understood that low compression engines are recommended for covered bodies, etc., Mr. Cowen points out on the telephone this morning that there will be exceptions to this, and it will be necessary for him to let us know in each case whether high or low compression engines are required. He is going into this matter, and will let us have this information at the earliest possible moment.

With regard to the trouble we are experiencing with fitting liners, through the studs not being long enough, it was understood this morning that in future you propose to fit longer studs. You will arrange, however, that on all existing cars which are delivered or produced, all the cylinders will have the feet bosses reduced in depth by the thickness of the liner, whether they are to be used with a liner or not, so that the compression can be altered at any time, and the cylinders are interchangeable. The cylinders which are not to have a liner fitted, however, will have special washers supplied and fitted under the fixing nuts.
