Re. STARTER MOTOR EX CHASSIS 189.GY -

FRANKEISS.

With reference to Hd{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy}/CI.5/Gl.{G. Linnett}9.4.32., in view of the special nature of this complaint we have personally investigated the same.

The motor was placed exactly as received on Mr.Brocks ordinary production test rig and I was quite satisfied that the motor was OK., and up to our usual production standard.

The contact gap on the small armature operated trigger switch was rather small, but this would not affect the motor performance.

The trouble reported might have been due to :-

(a) A piece of grit or foreign matter lodging between the contacts on the armature trigger switch thus preventing the main circuit operating. We should like to know if the electrician confirmed that the main switch circuit was complete when the motor was engaged. This is important.

(b) A dirty connection of the main heavy current wire to the motor. Can the electrician tell us the voltage across the motor main terminals when engaged?

(c) A corroded main heavy cable connection on the battery. We have had this trouble before causing a heavy drop in the voltage at the motor when using the starter heavy current, but we are dubious of this in the present instance owing to N stating that when a new motor was fitted the system was OK.

As three motors have been fitted to this car since delivery just over a year ago it does rather point to a fault on the starter system external to the motor and this apparent inherent fault should have been isolated rather than continually changing motors causing inconvenience to the customer.
