EXPERIMENTAL REPORT.

Expl. No. 4594

REF: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1/LC7 11.23.

From examination of the 20 HP. car (79-AO) after completion of 10,000 miles - we suggest the following parts could be improved :-

(1) Oil Pump Bearings. (handwritten: formed) Spindles/on the gear are very badly scored. It is suggested that these bearings could be increased in size to advantage. We have had similar failures on another engine.

(2) Brake on Dynamo Drive. The fibre pads were completely charred away. We have ordered some Ferodo die-pressed material to be used in place of the fibre. We suggest however that the whole design of this brake could be improved.

(3) Wear on Rear Brake Drums. We have changed over to .6 carbon steel. We find however that with the same material we get more wear on the 20 HP. drums than we get on the 40/50 HP. We suggest that the foot brake shoes could be increased in width to advantage.

(4) Rear Axle Pinion Thrust Bearing. We shall shortly be issuing standardisation sheets for the New Departure Bearings to take the thrust.

(5) Quality of Oil. We have for some time suspected Prices Oil of having deteriorated in quality. We believe this firm has changed hands and is now controlled by one of the Oil Groups.
The interior of the Crankshaft on this car was practically made up with a black deposit.
We have been getting very good results with Wakefields 'XL' Oil which is a compound oil containing about 90% mineral.
We are also testing 'Duckhams' and 'Shell'.
