Replying to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}5/T.6.3.33. Item (1). - We have had difficulty with the automatic tappets on J.lll engine. First of all a number of modifications had to be made to the design, after that the material failed. We are still not clear of all of our troubles but we expect to have the car complete in about three weeks time. It is probable some modifications will be needed to the induction pipe but these are being carried out on Peregrine and will be scaled up for J.lll when we are satisfied. We have received a design for a modified front axle, which is at present being detailed. Item (3). Peregrine. The Peregrine car in France has completed approximately 10,000 miles fitted with Woodhead springs and Rudge Whitworth wheels. This car is now on its way back to Derby. Item (4). Bensport. This car is at present held up in Chateauroux owing to failure of gudgeon pin locking rings. A new set of pistons are being sent out tomorrow with a modified type of gudgeon pin fixing. We expect the car to be running at Chateauroux again early next week. Our programme is to have the second car ready before Easter (April 16th.) The third and fourth cars should be ready three or four weeks later. Item (5). No work has been done on the 'SpectreCodename for Phantom III'. Item (6). 85-JS.{Mr Johnson's Secretary} car is having all the special things fitted to it which we agreed to fit to 19-EX., i.e. larger bore, higher compression, larger carburetter, etc. Item (7). We have received no further information from W.W. on this point. Item (8). The modified shutters are on order, but we shall have nothing to show Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} tomorrow.
