X 4305 By7/G28421 April 28th, 1921. Mr. Claude Johnson, Managing Director, Rolls-Royce Limited London, England. Attention: Mr. Hives. X4306 X3667 X3764 Dear Sir:- Re Cylinder Wear - Winter Starting Troubles Mr.Caswell writes as follows, under date of April 18, with regard to Chassis 2PP:- "This chassis is one of the few sent over with the solid type aluminium pistons fitted, and was the subject of a letter from E.P. notifying us that they would supply us with a set of split pistons for replacing, at their cost. So far these pistons have not been sent, but a set has been fitted that were supplied by Springfield. The car came in for this work after running 1700 miles. "In addition to the knock from the pistons there was a chronic rattle, which was traced to a loose camshaft wheel, the nut holding the gear to the camshaft being finger-tight only. After refitting this with a new key, the car is quite satisfactory. "At the time we fitted the new pistons, the cylinders distinctly showed signs of wear. There was quite a ridge on the top and bottom of the cylinders, showing that the wear was due to the piston rings. (The wear occured at top and bottom of travel of rings not pistons). It is quite possible the use of the primer has brought about this condition, by diluting the oil in the cylinders. "The cost of carrying out the above work will be charged to Derby". The wear of the cylinders is a common occurence in this country during winter running where the choker or priming device is carelessly used. Our own cars are particularly subject to this, as Mr.Hives knows, because of the very great difficulty of getting them to start with the priming device in cold weather. | ||
