We assume that the principle still holds that the magnetos on the cars produced in U.S.A. must be identical with those on cars produced at Derby. Hence, the standard-isation of an American magneto for the U.S.A. cars would also involve the standardisation of that magneto for the cars built here.

Mr. Olley has repeatedly urged for the standard-isation, for the U.S.A. cars, of one of the U.S.A. magnetos. We are anxious, therefore, to have confirmed whether we should go on working with such a possibility in view. Mr. Olley now states that these magnetos should now either be paid for or returned at once. If, in view of the possibility of the development of a British magneto at least as good as the R.{Sir Henry Royce} Bosch Z.R.6 (the particulars of which possibility we give below), it is not considered worth our while doing any further work on these U.S.A. magnetos, we should like to be definitely so informed - otherwise we will carry on with our tests.

It will be remembered that these magnetos from U.S.A. were a selection by Mr. Olley of the best they States had to offer.

Mr. Olley has the impression that the testing of magnetos at Derby has, so far, been given little attention because of doubt as to whether they would excel our present standard. This, however, is an incorrect impression on his part, it having been stated that they have been given relatively little attention, first, owing to lack of facilities for
