RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/AEC.1/JWA. 16.4.37. (contd.)

Unnecessary roughness of the finish of the teeth is found on many gears, which prolongs lapping, and tends to destroy accuracy.

It is suggested that BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} states on piece drawings of gear box gears, full particulars of the gear teeth, as outlined above in "Suggested Maximum Errors".

These limits should then be worked to. At present doubtful gears are amongst each batch sent to the fitters, to be probably passed through and subsequently rejected by the Test Dept.

Control of the gears dimensionally is aimed at.

The contention that gears made to extremely fine limits can still be noisy, is no doubt true, but is due to elastic deflection of the teeth causing a disturbance of motion. As those irregularities are algebraically additive to the measurable errors inherent in the gear, it is necessary to reduce the latter errors to a minimum.
