With regard to N. Sch. 2954 for reducing the above troubles, we ourselves have been testing an idea for improving the oil-tightness of the leather washer, with fairly promising results. We suggest it for your approval for inclusion in this scheme. The attached sketch shows the new type of leather washer, moulded round so as to give more of a scraping action on the pump spindle. The upper steel washer pilots on the pump spindle. This modification was carried out on the worst leaker we could get, and has effected a cure so far. The Test Dept. ran it for three weeks or so and said it was perfectly oil-tight under conditions that had never failed to produce a leakerbefore. The most severe test is to overfill the pump with cold oil and then run the engine for some time nearly boiling, when previous pumps have never failed to leak oil into the cockpit, due to expansion. In this case the surplus oil came out of the filler cap vent. On this pump we also tried a scheme to prevent oil that has leaked out from running down the passenger side of the dash. This is also shown on the sketch and consists of the small baffle placed under the lever spindle, and two | ||
