OUR REF: JWL/NS.{Norman Scott} YOUR REF: 9th February, 1933. Handwritten routing note: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} / Please SD' / RZ / 10/2/33 Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. Mills. We thank you for the interview you recently granted to our Mr. T. A.{Mr Adams} Pain regarding the six Radiator Thermostats despatched to you on the 27th ult. We are surprised to hear from Mr. Pain that the first one of these which you tested opened at 40°C. and think there must be some mistake. Actually these Thermostats were filled with acetone which does not vapourise until 57°C. is reached so no pressure or movement whatever could be obtained until at least 57°C. was reached. Under working conditions we presume that the movement under load of 27½ lbs. at 90°C. is most essential rather than the theoretical test with no load, for which movement should commence at 75°C.
