As regards the eyes of the long plates, I have come to the conclusion that we cannot adopt anything better for the purpose than the solid eye we are at present using, the reason being that the extra mechanical strength is necessary in some case and provide a neat finish. It is thought by the present spring makers to be no more trouble than producing a rolled eye, and lastly, it is a necessity for the proper support or carrying of the bush. Upon this last point I should like to comment that the fins in the end of the spring are a source of very great trouble to maintain in a satisfactory state of lubrication, and I believe the only way we can do this is with the use of a loose bush which can move round, and so work in fresh lubrication with a very small rotary movement.

It is also desirable that in some cases ferodo or self-lubricating bushes will be adopted. This will also demand a smoothly bored hole that will provide a satisfactory wearing surface.

You will see, therefore, that we must still maintain our endeavours to make the most faultless work, rather than make something which is somewhat less expensive.

In the future it is possible that the rear spring will also have a solid eye at each end.

Yours faithfully,

From F.H.Royce.
