FRONT AXLE.

While we were in Derby we inspected parts of the front axle with a view to cheapening them.

The 20HP. brake operating scheme is more expensive than P. 2. and more troublesome. We should have liked to modify the front axle to effect this economy in addition to simplification of the forgings both of the axle and pivot which Derby ask for.

While we are doing this we should have very much liked to have dropped the spring pads somewhat in the way that was done on P. 2. There is a 20HP. axle in existence on these lines which would require some revision from the economy point of view.

Dropping the spring pads in this way would assist us very much in the geometry of the steering, and with the more flexible front springs now proposed very much in the clearance between the spring and the frame.
