contd:- -2- ENGINE. I could not run very fast because I could not trust the roads. At 55 m.p.h. there seemed lots of acceleration. This engine seems good and has caused no trouble on the 1600 miles of difficult and mountainous roads, except the one thing of detonating, which must be altered and compared with other engines of the same compression pressure. I ran with battery only which we ought to use if we can find no advantage of the magneto, and no disadvantage of plugs getting dirty while out of use. I say the burning gas will keep them clean. CONTROLS. Larger and thinner steering wheel and Goshawk controls are better than our old standard. AUTOVAC. Worked well and seemed sufficient for the mountains. FLOORBOARDS HEAT. Floorboards seemed cooler, and the small radiator was sufficient for the mountains during this cool weather. I think she heats less water. WEIGHT. The great point I noticed was that we must make a desperate effort to remove some of the weight from the front wheels. This does much harm and makes the steering difficult. SPARE WHEEL CARRIER. I hope this is not our make. It is very ugly and not good. Many mechanical defects. One side automatically comes unscrewed; bolt rivetted into thin plate unreliable. I returned home on No.5 Gos. It is a gem all round, including the body, for my desires. Make some more as good. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
