1110 EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/NRC.{N. R. Chandler}8/JH. 10th. November, 1938. Borg & Beck Co.Ltd., Tachbrook Road, Lymington. For the attention of Mr. Armitage. 13½" Borglite Plate. Dear Sirs, We are pleased to inform you that the 13½" 'Borglite' plate, recently fitted to a Phantom III, is so far behaving very well, although no great mileage has been run as yet. We estimate that the reduction in inertia, as compared to the 'Long' type plate, is about 35% which is much appreciated as a factor in reducing the work done by the gearbox synchro cones. Ultimately we would like to eliminate the steel disc between the hub and the spring blades by extending the diameter of the hub so that the blades could be rivetted directly on to it, and we would be prepared to design a new hub with this object in view, but before doing so, we would be glad to know, if, given a free hand in the design, you would like to make any modification to the drilling or diameter, and also if you would like a spigot on the hub to locate the inside radius of the spring blades. We would be interested to know if you have designs for the 10" and 11" plates of the Borglite type, although it will be appreciated that as these are of the "crimped" type, the reduction in inertia would not be nearly as great as when replacing the Long type. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
